Help with hard sudoku puzzles?

April 1st, 2010

I can play sudoku relatively well. I can beat most all the way up to and including hard without guessing at an answer. But once you get to levels above hard (some call them insane or tough), I find it impossible to beat it without guessing and testing at least once. I want to know if there is any other method to beating this extremely difficult puzzles without guessing. I already make sure to look at each row, column, and then the squares to see what numbers to eliminate.

The one I’m currently trying to beat without guessing is http://sudoku.com.au/1V1-6-2005-sudoku.aspx. I’ve tried to find a way to post it with my answers and possibilities listed, but it won’t let me.

If you could step by step explain some of the harder sqaures or give me any tips, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Oh, I didn’t realize. Here is the grid form you asked for.
This is as far as I have gotten the puzzle and I know all the answer thus far are correct
Row 1:_ _ _ _ _ _ _ 8 _
Row 2:_ _ _ _ 3 _ 6 7 _
Row 3:1 _ _ 9 _ _ _ _ _
Row 4:_ _ _ 2 _ 3 7 5 4
Row 5:_ 7 2 5 8 _ 1 3 6
Row 6:5 3 _ 7 _ 1 _ _ 8
Row 7:_ _ _ _ _ 5 _ _ 2
Row 8:_ 6 8 _ 7 _ _ _ _
Row 9:_ 4 5 _ _ _ _ _ 7

Unfortunately the link doesn’t work. Can you just write the numbers like this:

Row 1: 2 _ 8 _ _ _ _ _ 1
Row 2: _ 1 _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Row 3: etc etc
Row 4: etc etc

If you do, I’ll write out a grid and have a look at it tomorrow!
