White Jazz - Hanging with ‘Scabs’ & Stewart of The Denny Bender 4
White Jazz runs Fridays at 10:30pm at the iO Theater starting July 17th. Visit ioimprov.com for more info.
The four-person improv show, White Jazz, presents a new style. Drawing inspiration from the white band leaders of the 1940s who turned the vibrant, fringe sounds of jazz into a form more palatable to mainstream audiences, White Jazz mix their off-beat, quirky improv with thick layers of lame. The show begins with an introduction of the ‘band,’ incurable dorks whose awkward over-eagerness puts their concert in permanent post-ponement. Carried away by their enthusiasm, they break off a brief interview with an audience member to ‘riff’ on their ideas with improvised scenes. If the scenes that follow are unrestrained and deeply strange, they are soon reined in by ’solos’ from the band members: opportunities to share feelings in fraternal geekiness that also lend the show a tone of touching honesty. Unpredictable but with a heavy schtick, wild and weird but hopelessly square, White Jazz brings an uncommon and hilarious style to the staid world of improvised comedy.
