How did the Sudoku puzzle get it's name?

Sudoku literaly means "single number". It was called "number place" from 1895 untill it was changed in 1987 by a puzzle publisher in Japan. Sudoku's had many names in its thousand year history.

    The name is Japanese and was invented by the Japanese publisher of games and puzzles, Nikoli. It means "the numbers must appear only once."

    Sudoku itself was invented by American Howard Garns in 1979.
